He leads the humble in what is right, and teaches the humble his way. Psalms 25:9
To our surprise there was nothing much to see other than the beauty of periyar river which we enjoyed for some minutes. Another interesting thing we watched is the force with which water flows through the dam, which was mind blowing. There was a park near by and some facilities for boating. We did not try both. It seems the authorities are not giving enough attention to this picnic spot which was once a very beautiful place ,which i can remember some 20 years back.
We took some photographs and decided to return back. But i can promise you if you plan for a trip to Edamalayar which is quite near it will be a very good experience through the forests. I remember once we have been to Edamalayar we were forced to stop our vehicle for half an hour or so for the wild elephants to cross the road which was a great experience. So if we plan for a one day trip try to include Bhoothathankettu, Edamalayar, Thattekkad Bird Santuary, Palamattam etc which will be a memorable one. Planning to visit these places soon so that i can give first hand experience even though i have visited these places during my childhood.
Bhoothathan kettu is a tourist place and is actually a Dam constructed across the periyar river. It is about 10 KM away from the Kothamangalam town and about 40 KM away from Cochin International Airport. It is on the way to Edamalayar reserviour which is about 15 KMS north of Bhoothathan kettu. I have been to this place couple of times. The name Bhoothathan kettu means "monster fort" and it was believed that the old dam was build by monsters.
It was a fine morning and as decided last week, we (me and my mother) started to my mothers house which is near to Thattekad Bird Sanctuary for a family get together. We had a fantastic get together after quite some time. On the return trip back home mother was narrating her childhood days when she and her friends used to walk to Thattekad, Kuttampuzha, Bhoothathankettu etc which are very near to her house and now became tourist spots. Suddenly we saw a board pointing to the direction of Bhoothathan kettu which is just less than 10 KM. I stopped the car and asked her, do you want to go there again; yes was the answer, as if she was waiting for me to ask that question;i think i never ever asked any such questions so far to her till now other than last weeks Paneyeli Poru trip. It was the answer i was also waiting for, i had my own plans :-)
