Even though this place is only 10 Kms from my house, it took me around 29 years to finally make it to this place. This area is known for its hidden dangers due to the extra strength of the river here, so parents never allowed us to plan a trip. It was a call from my friend who enquired about this place for a trip suddenly helped me make a decision to visit this place to give him a feedback from my experience.

A few decades before the news of school/college students missing here who come here for enjoying seemed to be a common news every year which might have created concern in parents who never allowed us to visit this place. Thanks to the authorities , now we have good guides who gives instructions and make the tourists to be careful in certain areas which make the trip very safe.

Paneyeli Poru is one of the least talked about and untouched picnic spots in Ernakulam district. It is just 25Kms from Cochin International Airport, yet a little known tourist destination, but a must see location from my first visit to this place.

It is the river Periyar which is around 244 Kms in length which is the major attraction here. What makes this place so special, in this 244 Kms of Periyar river is the sight of river flowing through rocks and the width of river in certain areas is so less when compared to the average width of the river through out its 244 Kms length. In olden days the bamboos were cut and tied as logs to form a raft. The raftsmen who carried these bamboos through the river had to really battle through the the tough waves of the river. The place got its name from a Malayalam word 'PORU',  which means fight.

Paniyeli Poru

The Lord will keep your going out and your coming in from this time forth and for evermore. Psalm 121:8

The area around is home to a variety of species some of them seems to be very rare and never seen before like the butterflies and the mushroom.

This is certainly a must see place if you visit Kochi. This area is well accessible by road and we have even KSRTC buses making trips to this place from Perumbavoor, the nearest town.

Including some more snaps which are taken in this very short and very good trip with my family members. Please reach out to me for originals or any help needed to visit this place.
